Merging two similar things is something we do all the time. We do this when we categorise objects with similar characteristics (using the dominant characteristic as the go-to label) because itโ€™s easier for us in the end to pull out what we need. ย Similarly, itโ€™s easier for the tongue to merge two letters, and sound out the one with the more dominant characteristic. This ruling is calledย idghaam.

Idghaam Al-โ€˜aam:ย the common/generalย idghaamย is to sound the first of two letters as the second โ€“ sounding the two letters as one letter with aย shaddahย on it. This commonย idghaamย has two branches:ย kabeerย (large) andย sagheerย (small).

Al-Idghaam Al-kabeer: occurs when a ย voweled letter precedes another voweled letter such that they become one letter with aย shaddahย on it.

Al-Idghaam Al-sagheer: occurs when aย saakinย letter precedes a voweled letter, such that they become one letter with aย shaddahย on it.ย Al-idghaam al-sagheerย has three categories, these are

Mutamaathil โ€“ Mutajaanis โ€“ Mutaqaarib

We will study these in greater detail. First letโ€™s look atย Al-idghaam al-kabeer.

Al-idghaam al-kabeerย occurs only when two of the same letters meet within a word โ€“ both letters are voweled, and therefore must be said as one letter with aย shaddahย on it.

Examples of this idghaam are as follows:

ู„ูŽุง ุชูŽุฃู’ู…ูŽู†ูŽู‘ุง

la taโ€™mannaa โ€“ย originally (ย ุชุฃู…ู†ูู†ูŽุงย )

ู…ูŽุง ู…ูŽูƒูŽู‘ู†ูู‘ูŠ

ma makanneeย โ€“ย originally (ย ู…ูƒู†ูŽู†ููŠย )

ุชูŽุฃู’ู…ูุฑููˆู†ูู‘ูŠ

taโ€™muroonnee โ€“ originally(ย ุชุฃู…ุฑูˆู†ูŽู†ููŠย )

Letโ€™s note the first example also involves a tajweed rule,ย Ishmaam. I havenโ€™t covered this yet, and will do soon,ย insha Allah. What we should focus on now though, is merging the two letters, sounding aย shaddah, and by principle, aย ghunnah.

Al-idghaam al-sagheerย happens when a voweled letter follows aย saakinย letter. Thisย idghaamย is under three categories. These categories define when anย idghaam sagheerย occurs. They are:

Mutamaathil:ย when the letters being merged come from the sameย makhrajย (point of articulation), and have the sameย sifahย (characteristic). Examples:

ุฅูุฐูŽุง ุทูŽู„ูŽุนูŽุชู’ ุชูŽุฒูŽุงูˆูŽุฑู

โ€˜Afaw wa qaaloo

Note:ย the last example happens on a consonantย waaw. If the first word ends in aย waaw or yaaโ€™ maddeeyah, then this ruling does not apply, and aย shaddahย must not be sounded on the secondย waaw/yaa.

Mutaqaarib:ย when the letters being merged come from twoย makhaarijย โ€“ close in proximity, and have different (but similar)ย sifaat.ย Examples:

The letterย qaafย andย kaaf

ู†ูŽุฎู’ู„ูู‚ู’ูƒูู…ู’

read:ย nakhlukkum

The letterย laamย andย raaโ€™

ูˆูŽู‚ูู„ู’ ุฑูŽุจูู‘

read:ย wa qurrabbi

The letterย noonย with the lettersย waaw, yaaโ€™, raaโ€™, meem, laamย (ย ูˆ ูŠุฑู…ู„ย from theย noon saakinahย ruling)

ู…ูู†ู’ ูŠูŽูˆู’ู…ูู‡ูู…ู

miyyawmihim

Mutajaanis:ย when the letters being merged come from the sameย makhraj, but have differentย sifaat.ย This occurs for theย natโ€˜eeyah,ย lathaweeyahย andย shafaweeyahย letters.

Theย natโ€˜eeyahย letters:

โ€“ merging happens to the taaโ€™ ุช and taaโ€™ ุท and vice versa

โ€“ merging happens to the taaโ€™ ุช and daal ุฏ and vice versa

Note, the first example has a little ุท in it. This is because the tongue should be pushed up completely against the hard palate as though you are going to pronounce theย taaโ€™ย โ€“ however it should not be sounded.

Theย lathaweeyahย letters:

โ€“ merging happens to the thaaโ€™ ุซ andย thaalย ุฐ

ูŠูŽู„ู’ู‡ูŽุซู’ ุฐูŽู„ููƒูŽ

yalhath-thaalikaย (read:ย ูŠู„ู‡ุฐู‘ู„ูƒย )

โ€“ merging happens to the thaal ุฐ and thaaโ€™ ุธ

ุฅูุฐู’ ุธูŽู„ูŽู…ููˆุง

Ith-thalamooย (read:ย ุฅุธูŽู‘ู„ู…ูˆุงย )

Theย shafaweeyahย letters:

โ€“ merging happens to theย baaโ€™ย ุจ andย meemย ู…

ุงุฑู’ูƒูŽุจู’ ู…ูŽุนูŽู†ูŽุง

Irkammaโ€˜anaaย (read:ย ุงุฑูƒู…ูŽู‘ุนู†ุงย )

This wraps it up for theย idghaamย ruling. Keep in mind that there isย idghaamย for theย noonย andย meem saakinahย rules. Andย idghaam kaamelย andย naaqisย for theย noon saakinahย rulingsย in particular.
